Protection and development of children in effected
families.
Association of Disabled Ex-service Personnel undertook a project
to protect and develop the children of effected families supported
by "Save the children" Norway. Initially 5 Ranaviru
villages from 4 Districts were selected to facilitate the necessary
improvements. They are Salawa in Colombo, Pangolla- Ibbagamuwa
in Kurunegala, Dambagoda in Kalutara, Mirijjawila and Lunugamvehera
in Hambanthota District. The benefits of this Project is for
the children under 18 years, family members of effected Ranaviru
Villages and children and Civil society members in the vicinity
of Ranaviru Village. |

To help children overcome the traumatic experience
of loss or disable of a parent due to the war |

To facilitate meaningful
and constructive communication between children and their
families who live in Ranaviru villages |

and have been affected by armed conflict. |

To inculcate and promote peaceful co-existence
of the children with the community. |

This Project started in 2002 and will continue
up to 2005 selecting other Ranaviru villages during this period
of 4 years. Arrangements are being made to provide facilities
depending on the available funds. It is also programmed that
the entire District benefits from the project other than the
Ranaviru villages in 2003. For this Galle, Matara, Hambanthota,
Kurunegala and Anuradhapura have been selected. Activities
In order to provide facilities a census of the number of houses,
families according to Age and Male Female categories with their
civil status was taken including age groups.Out of a total of
360 houses in the 5 Ranaviru villages |

| there are nearly 1000 living in them. The number
of disabled personnel in the 5 villages are 233 and there are
widows who have been forcedto this status due |

| to the ongoing conflict. |

| As a part and parcel of this project we conducted
workshops and familiarization programs. The participants included
social service volunteers from Ranaviru villages, ADEP staff
and social service developers .Dr.Raj Rama, Mr. Abeytatne Attanayake
M/S. Nilani Weragoda and institutions like Ahimsa, Helpage Sri
Lanka, Sumithrayo were also available. In addition for children
development programs and training Probation Department, Sarvodaya
organization as well as Siri Praboda institution officers were
also helpful. For the library program and training SCN supported
providing advices with financial help. Leadership oriented programs
as well as training of Pre-school teachers were also carried
out. Organizing children clubs and giving training for selected
voluntary participants in maintaining libraries were one aspect
where ADEP took keen interest. We were able to provide library
books and sports gear with Pre-school kits to all the Ranaviru
villages under this project. |
